The Long-Lasting Benefits Of A PVC Fence

Posted on

Marking the property of your home with a fence can help to avoid conflicts with your neighbors, and giving yourself privacy in your own backyard is a boon in and of itself. On the other hand, if you install a fence, you give yourself yet one more thing that you need to maintain. As for as maintenance goes, a wooden fence is beautiful and natural, but wood is biodegradable and will only survive it you properly maintain it. A PVC fence can look just as good as its wooden cousin and save you money and effort on maintenance.

The Drawbacks of Maintenance

To really understand how nice it is to have a PVC fence, you have to have an appreciation for the effort required to maintain a wooden fence. Water combined with a cycle of heating and cooling can cause a wooden fence to warp so that what used to be straight fence slats are now erratically bowed. The more your fence warps, the more likely it is for the warped boards to start to crack. The sun will bleach your fence until what once was a deep, rich color becomes faded silver or grey. Finally, insects and mildew can promote rot in your wood. To prevent Mother Nature from completely consuming your fence, you have to apply sealer every time the color of your fence starts to fade. You may also need to treat your fence with insecticides or herbicides to fight off these destroyers.

The Advantages of PVC

PVC is not a natural material, but this a good thing. Once you put your fence in place, you don't have to buy and apply sealants, insecticides, or herbicides to protect it. In fact, the only maintenance that it should require is a washing whenever it gets dirty. If you like the look of wood, but you don't want to take on the maintenance associated with a wooden fence, then you should consider installing a PVC fence with a faux wood grain. While this won't capture the color of natural wood, the grain in the PVC should give the appearance of wood.

PVC is a durable fencing material that should look as good as the day you installed it for years to come. If maintenance is not your biggest concern, consider that PVC fencing comes in various styles and colors, so no matter what look you are trying to create for your home, you should be able to find PVC fencing that will act as a complement. At the very least, you owe it yourself to consider the advantages of PVC before you make a choice for your fencing material.
